Focus on the UNB Collection:

This month’s Focus on the Collection shines the spotlight on Jacques Martin’s sculpture La Reponse du Cheval.

If you find yourself in front of the Harriet Irving Library looking down towards the campus gates, you are standing in an area known as Jacob’s Yard. There you’ll find Jacques Martin’s remarkable 22.5 foot corten steel sculpture.

This outstanding work of art was part of a juried competition to commemorate the new millennium in the year 2000. Engaging with the theme of the competition: People, Nature and Technology— the sculpture celebrates our capacity for innovation and achievement in the greatest moments of personal and collective difficulty. It pays tribute to the triumph of human spirit and genius, which through its power to imagine, can propel humankind to new heights.

Jacques Martin received his Bachelor’s Degree in Arts from the Université de Moncton in 1974, a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the Université Laval in 1977 and a Master’s Degree in Plastic Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1992. Since the late 1970s, Martin has taught drawing, painting, sculpture and art history at Saint-Louis-Maillet, Université de Moncton’s campus in Edmundston. His practice centers on sculpture, installation and drawing.

The UNB Collection of 2,300 artworks can be seen in the libraries, green spaces, hallways and lounges across the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. These works are a part of the university environment and have become a welcome part of the daily life at UNB.

The UNB Art Centre (506-453-4646) is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton.
