We Want Your Mem Hall Memories!
UNB's beautiful Memorial Hall marks its 100th Anniversary in September. To celebrate the iconic building's rich history, we invite you to share your memories.
"Perhaps you attended classes or a camp in Memorial Hall, or saw a play, concert or exhibit over the years," says UNB Art Centre Director Marie Maltais. "If anyone has memories to share, we would love to hear all about them!"
All responses can be sent to the UNB Art Centre at artcntr@unb.ca. Please title all emails with "Memorial Hall Memories".
The iconic building has had a full and varied history. Built to commemorate the 35 students and alumni who lost their lives in World War I, Memorial Hall was the original home for the chemistry and chemical engineering departments. It also hosted many university convocations and Founders Day events as well as the annual Christmas Party featuring a puppet show and President Colin Mackay reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas."
Today, Memorial Hall is the hub for the Fine Arts at UNB and home to the vibrant UNB Art Centre, the Centre for Musical Arts and Theatre UNB. It regularly plays host to live theatre, concerts, art exhibitions and more.
Focus on the UNB Collection: Direction, Element, Time, Season
Damien Worth
Direction, Element, Time, Season, 2020
This month's Focus on the Collection shines the spotlight on Damien Worth's Direction, Element, Time, Season, 2020. If you are on the UNB campus, then visit the Kinesiology Building to check out Damien Worth's painting on the Second Floor. Damien Worth is a multi-disciplinary artist who explores the tensions that exist in the spaces that we inhabit, both natural and manufactured. He uses landscape as a narrative device to explore oppositional forces within the picture plane: abstraction and representation, pattern and shape, light and dark. As well, landscape becomes the locus of uncertainty and transformation for the exploration of dislocation, duality and transition. Worth is interested in how we navigate spaces, how sites transform over time, and the function of memory as it relates to personal identities.
Worth's interest in experimental approaches to art production began with printmaking and now include a variety of media: painting, digital media, video, gaming software and installation. Damien Worth is a graduate of NSCAD and currently lives in PEI.
The UNB Collection of 2,300 artworks can be seen in the libraries, green spaces, hallways and lounges across the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. These works are a part of the university environment and have become a welcome part of the daily life at UNB.
The UNB Art Centre (506-453-4623) is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public.
