The UNB Saint John Seawolves women’s volleyball team has made their first roster move for the 2024 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) season signing, Sasha Buchanan.

She started playing volleyball because of the connection it gave her to her family, as many of her relatives had a love for the game too. Sixth grade is when it all began for Buchanan, playing for her middle school volleyball team, and she continued to increase her level of play from there.

Joining UNB from St. George, New Brunswick, Buchanan is familiar with the local volleyball scene, as she played club volleyball with the Timberwolves, a not for profit, volunteer athletic association created to promote volleyball in the local community.

Playing for the Timberwolves for the last four years, Buchanan has built friendships for life. “Volleyball is a sport that really brings teammates together and you develop a close bond with them,” she said. “Most of my closest friends are people I have played volleyball with,” she added. Her Timberwolves club team placed 2nd in provincials. Last summer, she had an exciting opportunity to play on the U18 Women’s Team New Brunswick and had great success, winning the Eastern Elites Championship. Keeping up her skills, Buchanan has been training in Volleyball New Brunswick’s Provincial Excellence program (PEP), a high-performance program designed to facilitate athlete and coach development.

Graduating from Fundy High School, Buchanan has plans to take a Bachelor of Health at UNB Saint John. Her goals for the season are to challenge herself as an athlete. “I can't wait to learn from not only my coaches but also my teammates, and grow and develop my skills,” she said.

UNB Saint John women’s volleyball Head coach, Collin Chambers, was impressed with Buchanan’s adaptability as a player. “Her ability to play any position across the front row and provide depth in the back row will add important versatility to our roster,” he said.

Welcome to the Seawolves family, Sasha!
