What are they saying about you? on keyboard

These days, the internet houses information on just about everything, including our own personal lives. It’s important to have control over what personal information you have displayed online for the world to see —your next employment opportunity or the start of a great friendship could depend on it!

Here are some tips to help you maintain the reputation you want in an online world that makes it increasingly more difficult to separate your “personal life” from your “professional life”:

  1. Think of your personal online reputation as if it were that of your business—what kind of things would you like to advertise and, similarly, to avoid advertising? In other words, what do you wish to have on display for anyone and everyone?
  2. If you find it difficult to adhere to the internet’s extremely varying audience, use an alteration of your name for the accounts you would prefer to keep away from professional (or just particular) eyes – try picking something your friends will recognize, while making it more challenging for people to find you without your knowledge.
  3. Keep your privacy settings updated on social media accounts – if all else fails, at least this will limit the content people are able to see when they do find you.
