Does your laptop run out of battery power and begin hibernating before you’ve even had the chance to realize what’s going on, let alone scoot off and grab your power cord to keep it running?

If you want to give yourself more advanced notice that your laptop is going to run out of juice, you can change your battery alerts so your laptop warns you a little sooner. To do this, do the following (note: these instructions were written for Windows 7 and may very slightly for other versions):

low fuel1.    Click on the Start Menu.

2.    Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings (or simply type "Edit Power Plan" into the search box and choose ‘Edit Power Plan’ when it appears).

Click the ‘Change Advanced Power Settings’ link.

3.    In the Advanced settings window, scroll down to ‘Battery’ and click the plus sign next to it.

4.    Here, you'll want to increase one or all of the following:

  • Low Battery Level - the first alert you receive telling you your battery is running low.
  • Reserve Battery Level - the second alert you receive telling you your computer will soon begin hibernating.
  • Critical Battery Level – the battery level at which your laptop will begin to hibernate.

5.    When you’re finished making your adjustments, click OK.
