I completely understand why UNB is granting an honourary degree to Tim Brodhead, but why is Harry Stackhouse being granted one?

Hi,

Thanks for your comment and your question.

Actually, BMO's donation went to support the men's and women's soccer programs as well as scholarships. BMO also generously donated money for UNB business plan competitions and to support the new Hans W. Klohn Commons @ UNB Saint John.

Calling it a "Centre" is really a joke, all it is is a turf field with a big BMO CENTRE sign going on the fence around the outside. Where will this $1 million dollars go towards? UNB Soccer has only ever been an average program and will only continue to be an average program.

Maybe if they actually did something to the field such as taking away the hill and putting in ACTUAL bleachers or making the clubhouse larger to accommodate a cafeteria or standing room, than you could also call it a Centre than. Now it is still just a field with a sign on it. Waste of money in my opinion.

This is a great idea!

However, please do not call it a "coin" - it is a medallion. A coin is legal currency - it is money. Coins are issued by governments or agents acting on their behalf. Oxford gives the definition of coin as "A flat disc or piece of metal with an official stamp, used as money. "

I agree that having them available for prior years is an excellent idea. If these coins are eventually available for sale some distinction could perhaps be made between those given out for graduating students and those purchased.

In any case this is nice to see.

Hi Vicki, Cynthia,

Currently, we have only minted enough coins for 2011 graduates that have "2011" engraved in them to mark their year of graduation, as we start this new tradition this year.

Having said that, we anticipated our alumni wanting to support the program for future students and also get a coin of their own. We are currently looking at options that would allow us to run past year editions of the coins. This will depend on what the minimum runs our manufacturers are capable of doing if we are to engrave the year of graduation on past graduate coins. We are also considering processes that might allow us to engrave the coin with the year of graduation post-production.

For now, I can add your name to the list of folks interested in the UNB coin. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

David Shipley

My 83 year old father (William J McDonagh) graduated from UNB Fredericton in 1957. How would I go about purchasing one of new tradition UNB coins for him. His area of study was geology plus he played hockey for UNB during he 4 years of study.

Please reply to email address above.
