Meet Ricardo Ehrler, a passionate environmental engineer from Honduras and current student in the Master of Environmental Management (MEM) program at the University of New Brunswick (UNB).
His journey to Fredericton is rooted in a lifelong love for nature, inspired by his father’s farming and agricultural practices back home. After three years working in the private sector, Ricardo knew he wanted to expand his knowledge, gain international experience, and contribute to global sustainability efforts. That search led him to UNB.
Why UNB’s MEM program?
For Ricardo, the hands-on learning opportunities stood out, especially the summer internship component that allows students to gain real-world experience in environmental management. Beyond academics, Fredericton itself captured his heart with its safe, welcoming community, abundant trails, and green spaces.
“Canada has always been a dream for me to visit and learn. When I looked at what UNB had to offer, I knew it was what I wanted.” – Ricardo
Learning and growing in environmental management
The MEM program has broadened Ricardo’s perspective on how environmental management is practiced in Canada compared to Honduras. Courses like Nature, Society & Social Ecology with Dr. Tom Beckley and Environmental Management Tools with Prof. Janet Blackadar were especially impactful. These classes created spaces for open dialogue, practical application, and personal growth.
“The MEM program has really prepared us for the Canadian workplace, teaching us how to collaborate with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.”
Internship at the city of Fredericton

Currently, Ricardo is gaining valuable experience as a Climate Change Engagement Assistant with the City of Fredericton’s Corporate Services. In this role, he works closely with city planners and strategists to develop communications around sustainable practices, greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, and community engagement.
This placement has allowed Ricardo to strengthen his interpersonal skills, apply knowledge in renewable energy, waste management, and policy compliance, and better understand how government-led environmental initiatives operate.
“This internship has shown me the importance of community engagement and how critical it is to shaping environmental change.”
Looking ahead
Ricardo envisions a future career in Fredericton or back home in Honduras, working with NGOs, government, or the private sector to advance sustainable development. No matter where life takes him, he’s determined to apply the lessons he has learned at UNB to create lasting impact.
For future students considering the MEM program, Ricardo’s advice is clear:
“This program is totally worth it. You’ll meet incredible people from all over the world, learn from professors who genuinely care, and join a welcoming community in one of the safest and greenest cities.”
Life in Fredericton
Outside of academics and work, Ricardo enjoys Fredericton’s friendly atmosphere, scenic trails, and opportunities for relaxation. Balancing work, study, and personal life isn’t always easy, but he makes time to recharge and enjoy the vibrant community.
“I love EVERYTHING about Fredericton, the safety, the nature, and especially how kind and welcoming the people are. As an international student, I truly feel part of the community.”
Ricardo’s story is a reminder that environmental management is more than a career; it’s a calling to protect the planet while building resilient communities.
