Population growth continues in New Brunswick, but the story is changing

New Brunswick’s population has been steadily rising, reaching 854,580 by the end of 2024, according to the New Brunswick Population and Demographic Counts Update: 2024 Data. But behind this growth are some important shifts.
For the first time in years, the number of study permit holders arriving in the province fell — down 23% in 2024.
At the same time, smaller communities saw a surge in newcomers, receiving twice as many non-citizens from other provinces compared to 2023. This suggests that affordability and lifestyle factors may be drawing more people outside the province’s largest cities.
While overall growth continues, these changes highlight how economic pressures and policy decisions are reshaping who is moving to New Brunswick, and where they are choosing to live.
