UNB jump-starts the school year with orientation week activities

The University of New Brunswick’s Fredericton and Saint John campuses are coming to life as Orientation Week activities begin and school gets back in session. Here are some of the Fall 2023 Orientation highlights:

UNB Fredericton

  • International student orientation: Friday, Sept.1. For all new international students, including degree-seeking, exchange and PAEP students.
  • Check-in day: Saturday, Sept. 2, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. For all new students. Townhouse check-in and opt-ins: Student Union Building (SUB) atrium.
  • Campus tours: Saturday, Sept. 2, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Meet in upper SUB quad.
  • Pickup soccer, frisbee: Saturday, Sept. 2, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Lower SUB quad.
  • Family and supporter orientation: Saturday, Sept. 2, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Wu Centre Auditorium.
  • Residence life orientation: Sunday, Sept. 3, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., individual residences.
  • Townhouse brunch: Sunday, Sept. 3, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wu Centre.
  • Commencement: Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 9 – 10 a.m. at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER. Meet in the SUB quad at 8:45. The UNB Fredericton campus gathers each fall to officially induct new students into academia. This special ceremony gives the whole campus community the chance to welcome new students to the UNB family.
  • Transfer student orientation: Tuesday, Sept. 5, 4 – 6 p.m.
  • First day of classes: Wednesday, Sept. 6.
  • Townhouse blue dinner: Wednesday, Sept. 6, 5 – 7:30 pm. Wu Centre.
  • Coffee house: Wednesday, Sept. 6, 8 p.m. in the SUB ballroom.
  • Bracelet making: Thursday, Sept. 7, 1 – 2:30 p.m. SUB ballroom.
  • Freddy Beach BBQ: Thursday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. Downtown Fredericton. Meet in the SUB quad at 4:45 to walk down together. Join in this tradition as the City of Fredericton welcomes new students to the community at the Freddy Beach BBQ.
  • Freezies and meet and greet: Friday, Sept. 8, 1 – 3 p.m. UNBSU presents, with UNBSU president in the Innovation Hub in Harriet Irving Library.
  • Memorial Hall 100th Anniversary: Friday, Sept. 8, 5 -7 p.m.
  • Carnival: Friday, Sept. 8, 7 – 11 p.m. Presented by UNBSU. SUB quad.
  • Halt the hunger fundraising day: Saturday, Sept. 10, at 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

UNB Saint John

  • Family and supporter orientation: Saturday, Sept. 2, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Oland Hall 104
  • BBQ: Saturday, Sept. 2, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Baird Dining Hall (residence students only).
  • Bonfire and live entertainment: Saturday, Sept. 2, 8 – 10 p.m. Outside the Hans W. Klohn Commons (residence students only).
  • Lily Lake beach day: Sunday, Sept. 3, 12 – 3 p.m. Bus leaves at 11:45 a.m. in front of the Security Office (residence students only).
  • Kahoot night, speed friend dating: Sunday, Sept. 3, 7:30 – 10 p.m. The Whitebone Pizzeria (residence students only).
  • Water balloon tie dye t-shirts and yard games: Monday, Sept. 4, 10 - 2 p.m. The Quad (Rain location: G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre).
  • Trivia: Spilling the tea on relationships, myths and sex, Monday, Sept. 4, 6 – 8 p.m. Co-hosted by Drag Queen, Dia Monde, CSASA and your SRC | Whitebone Pizzeria. Free pizza.
  • Things I wish I knew as a first-year student: Tuesday, Sept. 5, 11 a.m. – 12 noon. Presented by your SRC (student-only event). Hazen Hall Lecture Theatre.
  • Clubs and societies expo: Tuesday, Sept. 5, 10 – 2 p.m. Hans W. Klohn Commons
  • BBQ: Tuesday, Sept. 5, 12 – 2 p.m. The Hans W. Klohn Commons Garden (Rain location: The G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre)
  • Commencement: Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 2 – 3 p.m. in the Ganong Hall Lecture Theatre. 2 – 2:15 p.m. All new students meet in the gym and line up by faculty | G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre. The UNB Saint John community will gather on Tuesday to welcome new students and celebrate their entry into higher education. All faculty, staff and current students will cheer on the latest UNB community members and show their support as they begin their journey.
  • Breakout Saint John: Wednesday, Sept. 6, 3:30 – 6 p.m. G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre.
  • Tropical bingo night: Wednesday, Sept. 6, 6 – 8 p.m. The Whitebone Pizzeria.
  • Meet your SRC and enjoy a poutine bar: Thursday, Sept. 7, 4 – 5:30 p.m. | | The Whitebone Pizzeria.
  • James Mullinger, comedian: Thursday, Sept. 7, 8 - 10 p.m. Ganong Hall Lecture Theatre.
  • Casino night: Friday, Sept. 8, 7 – 9 p.m. G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre
  • Shine day bottle drive: Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Parking Lot by G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre. Bring your bottles to the Saint John campus on Sept. 10 and support Canada’s largest post-secondary school fundraiser. Shinerama is an initiative in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada and has been an Orientation Week staple at UNB since 1973.
