Note: The following message was sent to UNB students, faculty and staff on July 7, 2023, from UNB’s President & Vice-Chancellor, Paul J. Mazerolle

Dear UNB faculty, staff and students,

UNB’s governing leaders play a crucial role in providing strategic direction and oversight of the university to ensure the institution’s success and advancement. A few weeks ago, we announced UNB’s next Chancellor, Wade MacLauchlan, who began his term on July 2, 2023. Today, I am pleased to officially welcome UNB’s new Chair of the Board of Governors, Tom Gribbons, and Vice-Chair, Janet Hoyt, who began their terms this month as well. As you can see below, both Tom and Janet have been strong supporters of UNB with their time and expertise. We are fortunate to have them serve in these important positions.

While we welcome and celebrate our incoming governing leaders, I also wish to express my deep gratitude to our outgoing Chair of the Board of Governors, Robyn Tingley, and our past Chancellor, Allison McCain.

Both Robyn and Allison have had a significant positive impact on our university during their terms. I thank them for their continuous commitment, time and guidance. Please join me in thanking our outgoing and welcoming incoming governing leaders:

Allison McCain - Past Chancellor

Dr. McCain served as UNB’s Chancellor for the past decade and has been a tireless champion of our university. A graduate of UNB electrical engineering, he has had a long and successful international career with McCain Foods. Before becoming Chancellor in 2013, he chaired the Forging Our Futures fundraising campaign that raised more than $100 million for UNB. He has represented UNB on several occasions and has provided wise counsel to me as president and to two of my predecessors. Dr. McCain has demonstrated extraordinary commitment with an ever-gracious manner. He exemplifies what service beyond self really means.

Robyn Tingley - Past Chair, UNB’s Board of Governors

Robyn Tingley is a Rothesay-based social entrepreneur, author and adviser to companies across North America, from startups to Fortune 100. Founder and president of diversity group GlassSKY Inc., Robyn has been a tremendous contributor to our Board over the past several years. Robyn re-joined the Board in 2015, having previously served for two years from 2006 to 2008. She has chaired the Advancement Committee, the Finance Committee, the Executive Committee and served as a member of the Nominating and Review Committee and the Executive Compensation Committee along with a few key search and review committees. An enthusiastic advocate for UNB, Robyn has played a critical role in UNB’s governance over the past several years. I am grateful that she will be remaining on UNB’s Board as Past Chair.

Tom Gribbons - Chair, UNB’s Board of Governors

Tom Gribbons

Tom is a Senior Portfolio Manager and Investment Advisor with RBC Wealth Management, Dominion Securities, in Saint John, N.B. He is responsible for wealth and investment guidance to high-net-worth families, businesses, non-profit agencies and institutions in Atlantic Canada from Saint John. Tom has a bachelor of science in forestry from UNB and joined UNB’s Board in 2012. He has served on the Investments Committee, the Audit Committee, the Nominating & Review Committee, the Executive Committee and the Executive Compensation Committee. He chaired the Properties Committee and later the Finance & Properties Committee and served as interim Chair of the Investments Committee. For the past two years, he has served as Vice-Chair of the Board, working together with Robyn and I to provide quality board experience for our members. We are fortunate to have a strong, well-connected leader like Tom serve as our next Board Chair.

Janet Hoyt - Vice-Chair, UNB’s Board of Governors

Janet Hoyt

Janet Hoyt is a lawyer, legal consultant and leadership development coach. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Acadia University, a Bachelor of Laws degree from UNB and a graduate diploma in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University. Janet practiced law for many years, first in Halifax, then Toronto, and was one of the first full-time talent management professionals on Bay Street. Janet has over 35 years of experience in the legal profession, counselling and coaching countless lawyers on career opportunities and career advancement. Janet is a proud New Brunswicker and has been a supporter and champion of UNB. She serves on several UNB board committees and was instrumental in the development of UNB Law’s vision for the future, including the recently announced move to the old Justice Building in Fredericton.

UNB has an ambitious strategic vision and our Chancellor, Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors play significant roles in the oversight and strategic direction of our university. I am grateful and optimistic to work with our new governing leaders as we move forward on our journey of growth and impact.

Kind regards,

Paul J. Mazerolle
President & Vice-Chancellor
