The University of New Brunswick is pleased to unveil UNBSafe on its Fredericton campus and Moncton site. UNBSafe is a new mass communication tool to send notifications to the university in urgent situations that pose an immediate safety or security risk to our community.
UNBSafe is a comprehensive tool with additional notification mediums, including a mobile app. Notifications will only be sent when an urgent safety or security risk arises. This includes storm closures, power outages, incidents such as fires or chemical spills, and active threats on campus. When an issue is resolved, an “all clear” notification will also be sent.
UNBSafe will replace ERMS, the Campus Emergency Notification System, on the Fredericton campus and Moncton site. Our Saint John campus will continue to use Sentinel for its mass notifications until next year. All university email accounts associated with the Fredericton campus and Moncton site will automatically receive UNBSafe emails. Community members can also choose to receive text and/or phone notifications. Users can subscribe by texting the word UNB to 723389.
Alerts will be sent across a variety of communications channels, including the UNBSafe mobile app, to ensure important information is shared quickly and effectively. Alerts pushed to the app travel over both WiFi and cellular networks, giving it the potential to reach users faster than other communication channels. The app also contains features such as general personal safety tips, emergency procedures, contacts for support services, campus maps, and “Friend Walk” and “Report a Tip” options.
The UNBSafe app is available for all UNB locations and can be downloaded for free on Google Play and the App Store.
In urgent situations, the need to provide relevant information efficiently is of utmost importance, and utilizing a variety of mediums will ensure our community remains safe and secure. I encourage everyone to download the app, subscribe to text/SMS notifications and do your part to keep UNB safe.
