The University of New Brunswick (UNB) and Canada House Wellness Group (CHWG) are pleased to announce that a memorandum of understanding has been signed to provide researchers with opportunities to pursue the health benefits of cannabis.

“We’re excited to be working with CHWG’s team of medical, technology, scientific and business professionals to further build on UNB’s status as the leading academic and research-based university,” says Dr. David MaGee, vice-president of research at UNB.

“Our faculty and staff, combined with CHWG’s professionals, will lead the way in developing and executing multiple shared projects that will be at the forefront of this type of research.”

CHWG is a diversified group of companies with a broad range of expertise relating to the cannabis industry. Through the partnership, UNB and CHWG will provide researchers with opportunities to discover crucial information on the use of cannabis as a medicinal product. It will also allow for shared technology research and development and the exploration of shared education and outreach opportunities.

“We are pleased to be partnering with an academic institution of such high reputation, and rich history, as UNB,” says Larry Bortles, chair and CEO of CHWG. “As our industry continues to grow and expand, we are very excited at the potential of what we will do together to change the landscape, not just in New Brunswick, but globally, in the medicinal cannabis area.”

The MOU continues UNB’s commitment to strengthening the provincial economy through innovative natural product research.

Potential areas of collaboration include education, technology platforms, analytics and clinical and medical research, as well as plant research and genomics. A working group will be formed to identify and prioritize these research and educational projects.

“We are looking forward to starting work together immediately,” says Dr. MaGee.
