The University of New Brunswick has appointed Dr. Michael van Zyll de Jong as dean of the faculty of science, applied science and engineering.
Dr. van Zyll de Jong comes to UNB from Memorial University, where he served as associate professor of applied ecology in the School of Science and Environment at Grenfell Campus. Dr. van Zyll de Jong served a three-year term as Director of the Environmental Policy Institute (EPI) at Memorial University from 2012-2015. He was also the co-lead of the Newfoundland and Labrador Forest Ecosystem Research Cooperative, a cooperative research venture between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Government of Canada, the Newfoundland forest industry and Memorial University.
He holds a PhD and master of science degrees from the University of Hull and a bachelor of science from the University of Toronto.
“I am looking forward to working with the students, the faculty and the UNB community to enhance the existing strengths and develop new opportunities for SASE,” said Dr. van Zyll de Jong.
Dr. van Zyll de Jong is committed to providing a quality educational experience for students. His teaching and research focuses on a variety of environmental and natural resource areas including aquaculture, forestry, climate change and policy development and has published extensively in these fields.
“I welcome Dr. van Zyll de Jong to his new role as dean, and look forward to his contributions, both to the faculty and the wider UNB community,” said Vice-President Saint John Dr. Robert MacKinnon.
His five-year term will begin on Aug. 27, 2017.
