As a follow up to the message sent to the UNB community on Friday, Jan 15 regarding a student on our Fredericton campus diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), we would like to provide you with the following update.

The University has cooperated fully with Public Health in their investigation and management of this case. We have assisted Public Health in establishing a list of those that could have potentially been in contact with the affected person, including students, professors and some staff.

Public Health advises that tuberculosis is not easily transmitted from one person to another and therefore requires very close and prolonged contact, so medical authorities believe that only people who had close contact with the student were at risk of being infected.

Those who were known to have been in close contact with the student who was diagnosed have been identified. Public Health has advised that those identified as being at risk have been contacted and have been provided with information regarding screening.

Public Health is continuing to investigate and will continue to communicate pertinent information to the university staff and students as necessary.

UNB will continue to work with Public Health officials during the course of their examination and remain committed to providing updates to our community as they become available.

Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact Public Health’s communicable diseases office at 506-444-5905 during working hours, or Telecare (811) after hours. The UNB community may also contact UNB Student Health Centre at 506-453-4837.
