The Primrose Scholarship has been awarded to three high school graduates: Justin Furlotte, Ainsley McCavour, and Kayla Nice.

These individuals' leadership at school, in the community and their involvement in athletics and music make them worthy recipients for this year’s Primrose Scholarship, in the amount of $5,000 each.

Justin's community spirit, and his belief in the power of education, will be a great benefit to him as he enters the Bachelor of Engineering program at UNB Saint John this fall. The Bathurst High School graduate is an avid volunteer with Free the Children, as well as a member of his school’s student council and safe grad. An accomplished musician, Justin's ability to combine academic studies with extracurricular activities has provided him with a well-rounded educational experience.

Ainsley's involvement in her community is as impressive as her academic standing. She helps a wide range of worthy causes as a volunteer for the Saint John Regional Hospital, Outflow, Habitat for Humanity and the KV Baptist Church. As founder of Ainsley's Pillow Project, custom pillows made for pediatric patients, the Kennebecasis Valley High School graduate has gained invaluable insight that will help her as she begins the Bachelor of Nursing program.

Kayla's ability to manage her academic studies with extracurricular programs such as field and ice hockey; soccer; volleyball; rugby; badminton; and rowing as well volunteering for student council, Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and as a member of her school’s yearbook team will serve her well as she starts her Bachelor of Science program this fall. The Harbour View High School graduate plans to continue to excel in her studies, athletic leadership and community involvement through university.

The Primrose Scholarship was created in 2000 by UNB Saint John alumna Sandra Irving (BA ’95) to recognize academic achievement, community involvement and athletic leadership to a new first year student entering UNB Saint John.
