FREDERICTON--The University of New Brunswick’s (UNB) faculty of engineering will showcase the capstone design projects of its final-year civil engineering students on Tuesday, April 15.

The symposium is part of a two-week spotlight on engineering design projects from students in chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and software engineering.

On Wednesday, April 9 teams from the new J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship (TME) program product design and development course demonstrated their prototype and competed for a cash prize sponsored by the TME program.

Winning team representative, Katie Pelkey, and her team developed a prototype for a portable, temporary rumble strip used in construction zones to increase safety.

“My involvement with the TME program gave me experience within my academic program that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise,” says Pelkey.

“The way the course was structured allowed students to come up with their own product to solve a real-life problem. This encouraged us to think as engineers and work as a team to find a solution.”

Each team had the opportunity to be co-mentored by a practicing design engineer sponsored by the NSERC-UNB Chair for Collaborative Engineering Design Education.  The program allowed the students to work with experts in both business and engineering.

“My team is hoping to continue developing and testing our product that we developed in the TME course this summer,” says Pelkey. “We are working with industry and are hoping to get it in use in a real-life application.”

Civil engineering students will present their designs on Tuesday, April 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Head Hall Auditorium on the UNB Fredericton campus. The symposium is free and open to the public.
