Experts to help evaluate risk in intimate partner violence situations

MMFC Workshop 2013: "Risk Assessment & Risk Management in Intimate Partner Violence Situations"

The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research (MMFC) at the University of New Brunswick is holding its MMFC Workshop 2013 on October 29-30 at the Fredericton Convention Centre. The two-day event includes a free public lecture on Tuesday evening, followed by an intensive full-day workshop on Wednesday.

Renowned intimate partner violence experts, Dr. Randall Kropp and Dr. Zoe Hilton will provide keynote addresses at the two-day workshop.

"The ability to evaluate risk in situations of intimate partner violence improves the safety of everyone involved," says Dr. Carmen Gill, director of UNB's Muriel McQueen Centre for Family Violence Research and professor of sociology at UNB in Fredericton.

Free Public Event

Dr. Kropp will share his research on the most important risk factors for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and provide participants with strategies for offender management, and victim safety tools on October 29 at 7:00 p.m.

Kropp is a clinical and forensic psychologist specializing in the assessment and management of violent offenders. He works for the Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission of British Columbia, and is an adjunct professor of psychology at Simon Fraser University.

Workshop (Pre-registration required)

Chief of Police William Reid, president of the New Brunswick Chiefs of Police and Chief of the Saint John Police Force, will give the keynote address on October 20, entitled "Managing Risk in the 21st Century."

Dr. Zoe Hilton, senior research scientist at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care and adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, will give the afternoon keynote address on "Risk Assessment as a Tool for Communication, Cooperation and Prevention."
