New UNBSJ program helps students prep for life

Saint John --- The University of New Brunswick in Saint John is excited to be piloting a new program to help prepare international students for graduation.
Graduation can be quite a busy time. Getting ready to leave the hallowed walls of UNBSJ to enter the working world can be a daunting undertaking. The Graduation Preparation Series (GPS) has been launched to take some of the anxiety out of it.
The GPS program, offered in partnership with Mount Allison University, is specifically designed to help senior-level international students plan and prepare for their final year at UNBSJ, as well as to prepare them for their life as a new graduate in a professional working environment. The Government of New Brunswick’s Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour are collaborating with UNBSJ as a sponsor of the GPS program.
"The program is divided into two levels consisting of five sessions," explains Ase Kelly Berg, program coordinator.
Each session focuses on a specific area such as career path development, job hunting and mock interviews. Participants are given the opportunity to increase their strengths within each area.
After both levels are completed participants have the opportunity to apply for a paid internship with local businesses and organizations.
"What we want to do is give our students the chance to gain practical work experience before they actually enter the workforce," says Kelly Berg.
