A University of New Brunswick student will receive $15,000 after being chosen for the 2012 Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies.

Kyle McDowell, a fourth-year UNB business student, was selected from 28 finalists based on his academic standing, entrepreneurial interest, extracurricular and community activities, and career aspirations.

“It’s an honour to receive this award, especially knowing the caliber of students who applied. It’s truly humbling,” McDowell said. “I want to thank Sobeys for selecting me. This award will put me ahead a few years and allow me to start working on my business ventures that much sooner.”

In addition to tutoring students and blogging for UNB’s faculty of business administration, McDowell volunteers at the Fredericton Food Bank and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

As a bachelor of business administration student, McDowell is involved in the Activator program, which pairs students with entrepreneurs looking to transform their ideas into a business reality. McDowell and his team were recently awarded “Best Overall Proposal” in the Activator program.

McDowell has a passion for entrepreneurship, and hopes to become a “serial” entrepreneur in Fredericton.

“The academic excellence, leadership skills and business knowledge shown by these students is remarkable,” said David F. Sobey, chairperson of the board of directors for the Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies. “My father was an innovator and I’m sure he would be particularly impressed with the great business initiative and entrepreneurship these students have shown through the various projects they are involved in.”

Five other business students studying at Atlantic Canadian universities will receive the 2012 Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies. In addition to the award recipients, four students will receive $2,000 for honourable mention. All finalists nominated by the deans of business at each university receive a $500 honorarium.
