TORONTO - The University of New Brunswick kicked off a year of anniversary festivities a long way from home Thursday with A Celebration of Canadian Spirit, a gala ceremony in Toronto that looked outward and forward as the institution celebrates 225 years.

It's bold," said Alan MacGibbon, one of five Canadians to receive an honorary degree at the event.

"I think it's a bold statement to say we're confident enough to bring our university to Toronto, have a ceremony in Toronto and promote who we are," said MacGibbon, managing partner and chief executive of Deloitte & Touche.

"So I looked at that as a nice statement of some risk-taking."

Eddy Campbell, UNB's president and vice-chancellor, said that while it's far from Fredericton, where a group of Loyalists carved a school out of the New Brunswick wilderness in 1785, Toronto is home to a significant number of UNB graduates and many of its top donors.

"In some ways, we wanted to come up and say thank you to them for their support over the years," he said Wednesday. "The other feature is we do want to blow our own horn."
