Have you recently received an email that reads something like this:

In the course of a research on xxx, I came across a reference to your thesis on “yyy”.

We are an international publisher whose aim is to make academic research available to a wider audience.

We would be especially interested in publishing your dissertation in the form of a printed book. Your reply including an e-mail address to which I can send an e-mail with further information in an attachment will be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

STOP! WAIT! Don’t just hit reply. Responding to such an email could do some real damage to your reputation as a researcher and to your career. Not every publisher, and every journal, is equally scrupulous or publishes materials on the same terms. Some may exaggerate their quality and impact; some may require exorbitant author fees; some may require that you sign over all rights to your own work, making it difficult, if not impossible, to publish portions of the material elsewhere or to control re-sale.

A summary of some of the concerns around these and similar issues appeared in “Investigating journals: The dark side of publishing” (Nature 495, 433–435 (28 March 2013) doi:10.1038/495433a; http://www.nature.com/news/investigating-journals-the-dark-side-of-publishing-1.12666). Included in the article is a “checklist to identify reputable publishers”. As well, librarian Jeffrey Beall, who is the subject of the Nature article, has a blog/website called Scholarly Open Access (http://scholarlyoa.com/) which contains his own “critical analysis of scholarly open access publishing” along with comments of others.

You can also confer with colleagues, explore tools such as EigenFactor (http://www.eigenfactor.org/) from the University of Washington, and contact your liaison librarian (http://www.lib.unb.ca/faculty/liaison.php) for more information and assistance.

We have a program to dispose of electronic waste, including computers, TVs, CRTs et cetera.

All e-waste is to come to HH351 prior to being placed in the disposal room so it can be properly processed before disposal. If you have a large amount of e-waste, enough that would overwhelm the space available in HH351, then you should place a ticket in footprints by emailing helpline@unbsj.ca requesting assistance with the disposal of this e-waste. We will arrange a time to process the equipment and properly prepare it for disposal.

Any electronic equipment such as clock radios, VCRs, computers to scientific measurement equipment can be recycled. We will accept TVs and CRT monitors as well, however TVs and CRT monitors contain lead and as a result, they are expensive to dispose of so we would like to minimize these components as much as possible. The general rule is if it is an electronic device which has surpassed its useful life, we will recycle it. If you are not sure if we can recycle your equipment please contact us at helpline@unsbj.ca and ask before you toss it in the garbage.

Thank you for participating in this program and taking one more step towards making UNB a greener corporate citizen.

Help us collect non-perishable food for our neighbours in need. Saint John food banks are in desperate need of food this time of year, as seen in recent news articles, and we thought we could make a difference. The Donation Drive will start next week, March 25th until April 5th. Look for the drop-off boxes in the office area of the HWK Commons and PCS which is the top floor in Hazen Hall or if you would like to start your own box in your area we will pick it up.

Some examples of food items are: Canned fish, meat and stews, canned vegetables and fruit, cereal, pasta, sauces, peanut butter, rice, soups, etc.

The donations will be very appreciated by the families in our community.

Thank you from the ISS Social Committee

UNB Libraries will be switching to a new integrated library system (ILS) in the summer of 2013. An ILS is essentially the software that helps us run the library. We use it to add books and other materials to our catalogue, manage patron accounts, sign books out to people, place holds, and a whole lot more.

The name of the new ILS we’ll be using is Worldshare Management Systems (WMS), which is produced by a company called OCLC that also makes Worldcat. We’ve been using Worldcat for a few years now as the main search tool on the UNB Libraries website for finding books and journals and other materials in our libraries. You might know it as UNB Worldcat.

This will be the first time we’ve adopted a new ILS since 1995 and the switch will bring a lot changes for library staff. People like you who use the library won’t notice a big change, but some things will be different, including the way you view your library account online and renew your books and the way you request books from other UNB libraries. You will also be able to refine your searches in UNB Worldcat in more ways after the switch.

You should also know that you won’t be able to use Quest, our old catalogue, anymore after May 2013 and that we’ll have to modify some due dates around the time we switch over to the new system in May. But don’t worry, any changes to due dates will mean you’ll get to keep the items you have checked out longer than you normally would and we’ll still be sending email notifications to let you know when your materials are due.

If you have questions or concerns about any of the changes, please don’t hesitate to ask: http://www.lib.unb.ca/help/ask.php] or to provide feedback online at http://lib.unb.ca/news/comment/] or in person.

After nearly thirty years of distinguished service, cataloguer extraordinaire Corinne MacDonald is retiring from the Information Services and Systems department of the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Corinne for the past nine of these years and I’ve watched with great admiration her ability and willingness to take the lead on major projects, to train and mentor staff, and to liaise with her many colleagues. She has a few words about her experiences at Ward Chipman Library and the Hans W. Klohn Commons:

I’ve worked with terrific people over the years and have established many lasting friendships..I hope that I have made a contribution to the broader educational efforts of the institution by helping to establish high standards for our department. I will miss my Fredericton colleagues as well who have provided me with support, help and insights over the years.

Corinne has a long history of church and community service and I have no doubt that her service work will keep her very busy in her retirement. Her musical theatre productions are legendary in Saint John, and she plays a mean game of golf. Corinne’s four beautiful grand-daughters will be delighted to spend more time with her as well.
