Greg Rodger came to UNB’s GGE to complete a Bachelor of Science in Engineering already having a previous history degree. He wanted a career where he would be able to work outside and avoid sitting in an office all day. So geomatics seemed like a perfect fit for him. The variety of work he would be tackling was what he loved about the profession: from surveying in the field, studying how software like Google Earth works, to applying the principles of history and law side by side with math and engineering.

His appreciation of history drew him to land surveying with the department, but he notes, “it is really a profession that lends well to all backgrounds because geomatics professionals are quite a diverse group of people.” Since graduating from the department, Greg has had many opportunities to explore, and was fortunate enough to work a position as a GIS specialist before committing to becoming a professional land surveyor.

Greg came to UNB in the hopes of breaking up the mundanity of working inside daily, and finally allow him to use his degree for something practical. He was not let down. In his new work as an Ontario Land Surveyor, he not only gets to apply his engineering and technical skills learned at UNB but also to use his history degree every day through research in order to help solve real-world problems.
