On 8 April 2021, the University of New Brunswick’s annual Engineering Design Symposium took place. This symposium is the culmination of two terms of work for undergraduate Engineering students in their capstone design course typically taken in the last year of their studies.
Held online for the second year due to COVID requirements, the symposium featured nine presentations by teams of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE) students. All the other Engineering disciplines were present too. In addition, the students developed posters for visitors to read during refreshment breaks.
The GGE presentations were judged by a panel created by the Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG) New Brunswick Branch. We are grateful to the CIG for choosing the judges who then spent a day at the symposium to carry out the judging. We thank the following judges:
- Colin Lang – CIG NB Branch Secretary / Geomatics Analyst, NB 911 Bureau
- Clio Marsh Nikias – Geomatics Analyst, NB 911 Bureau
- Brandon MacDonald – Manager, Geomatics (Atlantic), WSP
- Mary McLennan – Technical Support Consultant, Teledyne CARIS
And once again, we are delighted to be able to thank sponsors for providing prize money. $1000 from the CIG New Brunswick Branch went to the first-place winners, McElhanney provided $700 for the second place winners, while Teledyne CARIS donated $500 for the third place winners.
We congratulate the CIG prize winners:
- Monitoring Salmon Habitat Using UAV Technology in Fundy National Park: Karla Brown, Conor Sexton, Lesley Spencer. Supervisor: Dr. Shabnam Jabari
- Combining Close Range and UAV Imagery to Create Dense Point Clouds in Urban Settings: Taylor Deruiter, Julia Diemert, Elsa Dumontet. Supervisor: Dr. Shabnam Jabari
- UNB Virtual Model: Kaila Reid, Anna Morrison, Ian Anderson, Jordan Major. Supervisor: Dr. Robert Kingdon
In addition, GGE professors granted two awards. The "Faculty Choice Award" was based on the oral presentation and written report submitted for the course GGE 4700 - Design Project and Report. A "Best Poster Award" was also made. The winners of these two awards were:
- Creating a Digital Field Note Application for Terrestrial Surveys UNB Virtual Model: Reid Hall, Usama Jamil, Alex Iain Scott, Chedi Mbaga. Supervisor: Dr. Peter Dare
- NAIT First Order Survey Network and EDM Calibration Baseline: James Heacock, Nicholas Sroka, Noah Thomas, Adam Tracy. Supervisor: Dr. Robert Kingdon
Preparations will soon start for the 2022 symposium.
