A Toast to Angus Hamilton
Angus receiving a birthday toast from Dr. John McLaughlin
On the occasion of his ninety-ninth birthday on April 18, it is my privilege and pleasure to propose this toast to Angus Hamilton, Professor Emeritus.
Since its founding in 1960, the Department of Surveying Engineering (now the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering) recruited a group of world class scholars who provided the intellectual, professional and entrepreneurial drive, which set it on the path to becoming the best in the world. Over the next six decades the Department went on to attract an amazing group of students, adjunct faculty, and research associates from across Canada and around the world who fundamentally changed the world of surveying and mapping, geomatics, and geodesy. As well, the Department was blessed with an exceptional group of support staff.
Without question, the leadership crucial to building and sustaining this international legacy was provided by Angus Hamilton.
While in many ways a quiet and unassuming individual, it nevertheless was Angus’ character and integrity, his breadth of knowledge and depth of experience, and his endless energy and drive that forged this extraordinary academic community.
He was the conductor of a world class orchestra.
The contribution of Prof. Hamilton to our Department and to the broader community has been both unique and profound.
And so, on this very special occasion, please raise your glass and join me in a salute to our leader, colleague, and friend.
To Angus Hamilton!
