Cansel Survey Equipment, with headquarters in metro Vancouver and offices across Canada, helps numerous organizations within engineering, surveying, mining, construction, and many other sectors to “measure, analyze, design, and build more efficiently and profitably” (Cansel 2020). In 2019, Cansel launched a scholarship program to support geomatics students in Canadian universities. Here at UNB, funded by Cansel, we have the Cansel Prize and the Cansel Award.

The Cansel Prize is a $2,500 prize awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering to an outstanding student who demonstrates excellence, challenges conventional thought, or explores new theories in our geospatial community. The student may be enrolled in GGE2013, GGE4700, or other courses utilizing geospatial instruments.

The Cansel Award, also valued at $2,500, is awarded to a Fredericton campus undergraduate or graduate Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering student. Selection is based on academic achievement and demonstration of innovation to push boundaries of what is capable in the geospatial community.

This year, we are happy to announce Taylor DeRuiter and Ivan Smolyakov are the recipients of the Cansel Prize and the Cansel Award, respectively.

Taylor and Ivan joined Pat Hills (Cansel Director Technical Marketing, Geospatial) to chat about this year’s school experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, future career paths, and more.
