A meeting of the Ketchum Medal Winners’ Club was held at Government House in Fredericton on May 16, 2017.  The Ketchum Silver Medal is awarded to the student who has the highest standing in the senior year of the Civil Engineering Program at UNB. The winners of the Ketchum Silver Medal meet only once every five years, so the gatherings are well-attended and highly-regarded.

The medal was established in 1897 in memory of Henry G. C. Ketchum, a well-known railway engineer who conceived of the idea and developed the plans for the Chignecto Ship Railway to transport ships from the Bay of Fundy to the Northumberland Strait.  About 2/3 of the project was completed before funding was cut off in 1897.  Henry Ketchum was awarded the first UNB diploma in Engineering in 1862 and is represented on UNB's Wall of Fame.  He died in Amherst, NS in 1896.

The winners of the Ketchum Silver Medal meet once every five years.  The 20 winners present at the dinner are shown in the photograph, including 2017 winner, Patrick Blanchard.
